Why a Mobile-Friendly Website is More Important Than Ever

You’ve been hearing it for years: mobile first. Responsive design. Everyone is viewing your site on mobile devices. You want your site to be accessible and usable for every screen size. Maybe you’ve heard it, but figured your site was good enough to pass.

Not anymore.

Starting April 21st, Google search algorithms will be prioritizing mobile-friendly sites in mobile Google searches. What that means for you is that if your site isn’t mobile-friendly by Google standards, your search ranking will fall. So even if you’re doing everything else right, you’ll have trouble getting found with Google search if you haven’t optimized your site to be mobile-friendly.

There’s more than one way to make your site mobile-friendly. You could have a separate mobile site, so when you have visitors on their mobile devices, they are directed to a site specifically optimized for mobile, usually m.youcompany.com; or you can have one website, that “automagically” detects the size of the screen and resizes the content appropriately. This is our preference since you won’t have to manage multiple websites just to be found in Google’s mobile search. Mobile-friendly benefits go beyond just search—no more pinching and zooming for your users, your content is displayed neat and clean.

Google has a great tool guide for helping you decide if your site is mobile-friendly, and even some ways to build a mobile-friendly site. If your site is mobile-friendly, you’ll see the Mobile-friendly tag next to your search result when searching from a mobile device.
