Why Should I Use SEO?

If you have a website and want people to be able to find it online, you probably need SEO.  If you’ve arrived here and didn’t get a chance to read the previous post, What is SEO? I recommend you head over there and give it a quick read.

There’s 2 main reasons why you would want to use SEO techniques on your small business website:

  1. You want to attract visitors to to your website to read your content
  2. You want to attract visitors to buy a product or service from your business

The natural question is, “How do SEO techniques help bring visitors to my website?”

I’m a tech guy. I’ve got all sorts of cables, connectors and assorted “tech stuff”. Often times, Ashley knows where my things are better than I do! She’s a very visual person so if she has seen it somewhere, chances are she knows right where it is. When I’m looking for something I’ll ask her if she has seen it and describe what I’m looking for. I’ll use some keywords to describe what the object looks like, or what it might be used with or what it connects to. If she has seen it, she’ll usually have a few place for me that I can check, sometimes places I would have never thought to look!

The search engines work much the same way.  People will use keywords to describe the product, service or topic that they information on and a few quick keystrokes later, a set of results appear containing a list of websites that the search engine feels would be a good place to start looking information. The search engines have seen millions of websites, and know what kind of information they contain. So, much like Ashley can recall seeing the things that I’m looking for, the search engines will have a good idea of websites that might have information based on the keywords used in the search. The goal for search engine optimization is to lead people to your website who have never been to your website before. Using some basic SEO techniques, which I’ll cover in the next post, the search engines will know about your website and the relevant content that prospective visitors are searching for.

If your website was poorly designed or doesn’t use some of the basic techniques that are helpful to the search engines, it’s possible that you may not be getting any new visitors to your website. We create websites that are designed with SEO in mind.
